Veteran Portuguese Carlos Queiroz, coach of the Ghana national team, praised the character shown by his players during the fatal victory over Panama with a goal without a response, at the opening of the teams’ campaign in Group Twelve of the 2026 World Cup.
Queiroz confirmed, in statements to beIN Sports after the match, that the confrontation was very difficult for the two teams, noting that his players suffered a lot in many periods of the match.

He said: “It was a very difficult match for the two teams, and we started suffering. We were trying to create opportunities, but we also faced some difficult moments.”
The Portuguese coach explained that the performance of the Ghana national team improved significantly after the break, as the players succeeded in imposing their control over the course of the match, adding: “In the second half we tried to improve and control the match, and we were able to end it in the best possible way.”
Queiroz pointed out that the decline in the morale of the Panama national team due to wasted opportunities gave his players the opportunity to resolve the confrontation, saying: “When the Panama national team began to feel frustrated due to not taking advantage of the opportunities, that was our opportunity to score and end the match, which is what was actually achieved.”
The Ghana coach concluded his statements by praising the fighting spirit displayed by his players, explaining that they showed a strong personality in crucial times, stressing: “The players showed a wonderful personality when we had to fight and struggle, and we played with the spirit of a group in the second half, and this is exactly what we needed.”
The Ghana national team achieved a valuable victory over Panama with a late goal, earning its first three points in Group Twelve, and starting its journey in the 2026 World Cup with an important victory.
