All eyes are on the Swiss resort of Bürgenstock, which will host, the day after tomorrow, Friday, the signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran. The Swiss government announced tightening security measures awaiting the arrival of delegations from countries participating in the signing ceremony.
Last Sunday, Washington and Tehran announced that they had reached a preliminary agreement to end the months-long war, which has killed thousands and caused severe damage to the global economy.
This agreement provides a framework for stopping military operations and extending the current ceasefire between Washington and Tehran for 60 days, during which nuclear talks are expected to take place.
Eager preparations are being made in Switzerland to host this event that the world has long awaited after months of difficult negotiations, punctuated by skirmishes that almost destroyed the fragile ceasefire agreement.
Details of security procedures
The Swiss government did not wait long to request the approval of the Federal Council on a set of measures aimed at providing a security atmosphere that would ensure the signing process proceeds without surprises or complications.
The Swiss government said – in a statement – that the Federal Council agreed to deploy a military support force of up to two thousand soldiers, as part of strengthening security measures accompanying the meeting.
The army will support the Nidwald District Police by assuming tasks that include protecting facilities, surveillance, reconnaissance, transportation, and logistics services, indicating that these measures come as a continuation of the security system established by the district authorities.
- Airspace closure
The Swiss government announced that it would impose a temporary closure of the airspace during the event, stressing that such a measure is necessary to ensure the security of the meeting.
She noted that Switzerland is obligated to ensure the security of guests who enjoy special protection under public international law.
She explained that the airspace restriction will be in effect from June 18 to 20, 2026 around the Bürgenstock area in a radius of 46 kilometers. The Swiss Air Force will undertake air policing and enhanced airspace surveillance as part of its primary mission.
- High-level presence
Senior representatives of the United States and Iran are expected to meet on Friday, June 19, in Bürgenstock to formally sign the memorandum of understanding reached early last week.
The signing ceremony will be held in the presence of high-level representatives from the State of Qatar and the Republic of Pakistan.

Selection and dimensions
Choosing the Bürgenstock Resort appears to be more than just an organizational decision, as it carries security, political and symbolic dimensions that go beyond the boundaries of the place. The resort, which extends over an area of more than 60 hectares and includes hotels and advanced reception and conference facilities, has transformed over the past decades into an international address for complex dialogues that require a great deal of secrecy, calm and security.
In this luxurious resort, which rises hundreds of meters above the blue waters of Lake Lucerne, the scene is not limited to luxury hotels and luxurious tourist facilities, but extends to a long record of hosting conferences and political negotiations that have made the Bürgenstock name synonymous with quiet diplomacy and sensitive meetings behind closed doors.
State of mediation
Bürgenstock’s attractiveness is not limited to the advanced infrastructure it provides and facilities capable of hosting major events, or its strategic location, which is less than 20 minutes by helicopter from Zurich International Airport, but it is also linked to the position that Switzerland enjoys as a country of staunch neutrality and a traditional destination for international mediations.
The place combines high privacy, easy access and tight security measures, thanks to its location on a mountain peak and its distance from populated areas, which are elements that make it a preferred choice for parties seeking to conclude sensitive understandings.
