In 2025, around 30 million visits were made to Swedish museums – which is a decrease of 1 percent compared to the year before.
This is shown by new statistics from The authority for cultural analysis. After the drop during the pandemic, museum visits have increased for several years, but that trend is now broken.
Of the museums’ total revenue in 2025, 63 percent came from public grants or grants, while 37 percent came from other revenue sources. This means that the part of the financing that does not consist of public funds has decreased slightly, from 39 percent to 37 percent.
However, the number of exhibitions and public activities increased somewhat in the large museums.
“The overall impression is that the situation in the museum sector looks stable,” says the statistician Erik Vestin in a press release.
