Lionel Messi, 38, cried during Argentina’s opening World Cup win.

Now the reason for the tears has been revealed.

– His father is ill, says the Argentine journalist Eduardo Feinmann.

Lionel Messi put on a great show as Argentina beat Algeria 3-0. The team captain did everyone three goals in the win and thus became the best World Cup goalscorer of all time, together with the German Miroslav Klose, 48.

But despite that, the match was not only filled with joy for the Argentine.

After making it 1-0, Messi started to cry and after the match he said that he has been through some very tough days.

– It was about something that had nothing to do with football. I have had some tough and complicated days, said the world star.

“Worsened this week”

Now the Argentine journalist Eduardo Feinmann tells us that the reason for the tears is that Lionel Messi’s father, Jorge Messi, is seriously ill.

– His father is ill, says Feinmann on Argentine Radio Mitre.

– He has been ill for a long time, several months, since last year. It is quite serious and in the last week his condition worsened and Messi is suffering.

What kind of illness Jorge Messi will suffer from, Feinmann does not go into more detail.

Argentina play their next match in the World Cup at 19:00 on Monday, against Austria.
