In an expressive gesture linked to the visual identity of the American city of Miami, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) announced that the refereeing crew that will officiate the Group H confrontation between the Uruguay and Saudi Arabia teams, scheduled to be held on Monday, June 15, 2026, local time, will wear pink shirts.

This step comes by Italian referee Maurizio Mariani and his assistant crew, as a gesture of appreciation for the hospitality of the city of Miami, which the referees’ committee took as a residence for its members during the preparations that preceded the start of the tournament, which lasted for about two months.

In the context of his comment on this initiative, Pierluigi Collina, Chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, explained that choosing the color “flamingo pink” came to reflect gratitude to the city that embraced them throughout their stay.

Colina pointed out that the crew wanted to present a symbolic message expressing their appreciation for the city and supporting the flamingo, which the city is famous for.

For his part, FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed that choosing this color is closely related to the fact that pink is a distinctive symbol of the city of Miami, noting that the aim of this is to send a friendly greeting to the city that is hosting the tournament’s activities.

This initiative evokes the general atmosphere of the city of Miami in South Florida, which is famous for its iconic landmarks, such as pink flamingos, and classic Cadillac convertible cars roaming Ocean Drive, as well as the architectural character of its buildings designed according to the Art Deco style, and the distinctive sunset scenes that add a pink hue to the city’s skyline.
