US Vice President J.D. Vance said on Wednesday that he believes that negotiations with Iran to end hostilities are making progress, after President Donald Trump rejected the latest proposal from Tehran, describing it as unacceptable.
Vance added to reporters at the White House: “I think we are making progress. The basic question is: Are we making enough progress to reach the red line, the target that the president has set?”
According to Vance, “The red line is very clear. He must be reassured that we have put in place a number of guarantees that guarantee that Iran will never possess a nuclear weapon.”
Vance explained – in his assessment of the current situation after Trump’s rejection of the latest Iranian proposal – that Iran must make an offer confirming that it will not possess a nuclear weapon.
The US Vice President indicated the continuation of talks with Iranian officials, revealing telephone conversations he held – this morning – with Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, and Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy, and “as well as with some friends in the Arab world.”
In his latest statements in this regard, Trump said that the ceasefire with Iran has become at its weakest stage and is on life support.
On April 8, the ceasefire entered into force with Pakistani mediation, before Trump later extended it without specifying a time limit.
Last Sunday, Iran delivered to Pakistan its response to the American proposal aimed at ending the war, but Trump described the proposal as “completely unacceptable” and “stupid.”
