30 years ago, the first “Toy Story” film made the Pixar company America’s hottest producer of animated films.
A series of hits and a few flops later, it’s time for “Toy story 5” – the kindest of the series.
The director Andrew Stanton has a close relationship to say the least with Buzz Lightyear and Woody in the “Toy story” films.
– To me, they are people. They are characters that are constantly evolving, he says when TT talks to him and the producer Lindsey Collins.
In the new film, the toys are being out-competed by ipads and other digital screens. What to do? Földer makes a story that directs some criticism towards all tech companies.
– I know, we are a tech company. We see the irony in that, it hasn’t escaped us, says Lindsey Collins with a laugh.
Most successful
The “Toy Story” films are among the most successful of those films Pixar have produced. Does that mean extra pressure before each new film in the series?
– It’s always the same pressure, it was before the second, before the third, before the fourth. But that’s part of the job, answers Andrew Stanton.
He says that when work on a “Toy Story” film ends, there is rarely any specific idea for a sequel.
– We sit there and think that there might not be a continuation. And then someone comes up with an idea and we start thinking about it. Much at the company has changed over the past 30 years and the gang that works here has changed. The important thing is that we always keep in our heads that if we do something, it must be worth the work.
“Leaving the door open”
Although it is never stated that a new film will follow up, the Pixar gang is not closing the door on a sequel.
– We do the ending like they do with TV series – a good ending, but we still leave the door a little open. If it’s over, so be it, but it shouldn’t feel as if a possible continuation comes abruptly.
Stanton is one of the veterans at Pixar. “Toy Story 5” is the first of the five films that have been completely approved for children in Sweden, the other four have had a 7-year age limit. Faced with the claim that “Toy story 5” is the kindest of the films because there is no violence or threats in it, he replies:
– Interesting. I haven’t thought of that. But I am 60 years old now. I’m not the sarcastic, bitter 30-year-old I was when we made the first film. The world needs more kindness. Here the toys are worried about their owner Bonnie. The existential threat of technology threatens them themselves, yet they focus on her getting well and finding a friend.
