The countries involved in the Russian-Ukrainian war are no longer willing to stop it, but rather to benefit from it, including Moscow and Kiev, which adopt two different narratives of victory and divergent terms of understanding, which analysts say reveal their livelihood from the fighting, not their efforts to stop it.
Even the United States of America and Europe have become more concerned about benefiting from the flow of weapons to the battlefields than stopping the blood in these fields, where more than a million people have died due to an attempt to change some geographical borders.
Hours after two separate phone calls made by US President Donald Trump yesterday, Sunday, with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, the two sides exchanged violent attacks that caused more civilian deaths.
The Ukrainian authorities announced that 13 people were killed and dozens injured in a Russian bombing that targeted a number of provinces, while 3 people were killed in a Ukrainian attack that targeted the city of Tula in southern Russia.
However, the Russian attack focused on the capital, Kiev, and affected most of its neighborhoods, causing fire to break out in an ancient cathedral, hours after Trump’s two calls and coinciding with the G7 summit and discussion of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
Zelensky called on the G7 leaders meeting in France to escalate pressure on Moscow, while European Union foreign ministers meet in Luxembourg to discuss Kiev’s accession to the union.
Two contradictory narratives
Naturally, each side has its own interpretation of the other’s attacks. Russian military analyst Viktor Litovkin says that his country’s recent attacks on Kiev came in response to Ukrainian attacks that targeted Russian schools and institutes, roads linking Moscow to the Crimean Peninsula, and the port that supplies fuel to ships in St. Petersburg.
Russia will not stop the war – as Litovkin said on the Beyond the News program – unless Ukraine accepts its conditions, and the Europeans stop trying to impose their conditions on Moscow through the Ukrainians.
The latest attack is nothing but a message that Russia wants it to confirm that Zelensky’s acceptance of its terms is the only solution to stop this war, according to the spokesman, who expected that “Ukraine will surrender soon because the United States and Europe will not provide it with weapons that will make it capable of defeating Russia,” which he said is “a victor and will not stop the war with the logic of the defeated.”
But the head of the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation, Serhiy Kozhan, opposes this Russian talk by saying that his country has set the destruction of the Russian army as a main goal, and he said that it is continuing to achieve it with its advanced marches.
Kozan also denied that his country was targeting the civilian sites and installations that Litovkin spoke about, saying, “This is not out of humanity, but rather it does not possess sufficient advanced weapons, and therefore it is focusing on military and strategic sites that are harmful to Russia, such as oil installations.”
While Litovkin says that Ukraine arrests people from the streets and throws them to die on the battlefield, Kozan says that his country has a program to recruit young people at the age of 17 and 18, and train them at the level of squad leaders, making it “the youngest army in Europe, and it is training in a real war.”
Therefore, stopping the war will not be possible unless Russia accepts it at the current lines of contact, and stops speaking as a victim while it is the aggressor, says Kozan.
You win from war
Aside from this or that conversation, the war between the two countries has moved from the stage of shock to the stage of monotony to the point of making a living from the war, in the opinion of political analyst Dr. Hassan Mneimneh, who said that the United States itself began to benefit from the fighting after it failed to stop it.
By selling weapons, training hundreds of thousands of young people, and obtaining aid, everyone is trying to benefit from reality instead of changing it in a way that stops killing more lives, and therefore it is not possible to build on Trump’s recent call with the Russian and Ukrainian presidents, as Mneimneh says.
The American position is based on opportunism, and this call is nothing more than an attempt to explore the field situation in this war, which Mneimneh said has reached alarming numbers of dead and wounded.
The American president has become closer to opportunism than to boldness after he failed to transform the war economy into a joint economy between the United States, Russia, and Ukraine away from the Europeans, according to the political analyst who said that Washington “does not expect any Russian or Ukrainian response to its talk.”
Therefore, Mneimneh does not believe that the United States has only lost or abandoned its influence in this crisis, but rather believes that it has gone on to benefit from this abandonment by selling more weapons to Ukraine with European funding.
Europe wants to stop the war based on data that absolutely preserves Ukrainian sovereignty, something that the speaker says is out of date from the point of view of Russia and America as well, and that it is not devoid of opportunism as well.
Europe’s call to restore the Ukrainian lands that Russia annexed during this war “means that the Europeans want Ukraine to limit Russia’s influence on their behalf, and for it to do this with the lives of its people, and later by purchasing weapons from Europe.”
While the Europeans believe that they are capable of managing the war in a way that exceeds Russia’s capabilities, the United States believes that Moscow is more tolerant of this attrition than Europe and that it will not retreat if it does not advance. Therefore, Mneimneh says that the Trump administration “does not show an effective position from the standpoint that as long as the war will not stop, let us benefit from it.”
