Moroccan international winger Abdel Samad Zalzouli expressed his deep sadness after he was forced to withdraw from the 2026 World Cup finals due to a knee injury.
The Spanish Real Betis striker said in a message on his “X” account: “To miss a tournament of this importance is a very harsh blow, but I will not give up.”

Al-Zalzouli suffered a sprain in his right knee during stoppage time of the first half of the friendly international match against Norway (1-1) on Sunday in New Jersey.
Al-Zalzouli added: “I would first like to sincerely thank all those who have sent messages of support and influence in recent days. Absence from an important tournament the size of the World Cup is a very strong blow, and I will not deny that it hurts me, but in difficult moments faith, patience and gratitude are very precious. Thank God for everything.”
He continued: “Those who know me know that I never give up. I will work every day with strength and motivation more than ever in order to return at my best and stronger.”
He concluded: “I also wish the best for our national team. I am convinced that they will do everything in their power to represent our country with pride. I call on all Moroccans to remain united behind them and support them at every stage.”
Betis supports Al Zalzouli
Al-Zalzouli received the support of his team, Real Betis, who wrote on his Instagram account: “We know how hard you worked to achieve your dream of the World Cup. Life sometimes deals unfair blows, but we are certain that your football skills and efforts will soon be rewarded. We are with you.”
The absence of Al-Zalzouli and defender Naif Akrad constitutes a strong blow to the new coach of the Atlas Lions, Mohamed Wehbe, in light of the remarkable brilliance of the left winger with his team Real Betis this season and his effective contribution to finishing the league in fifth place and his return to participating in the Champions League competition next season.
Zalzouli, the 24-year-old former Spanish winger for Barcelona and Osasuna, scored 10 goals with 9 assists in 29 matches in the Spanish League.
He also appeared with the Andalusian club in the European League competition and contributed to their reaching the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Sporting Braga of Portugal, by scoring 4 goals with 3 assists in 12 matches, in addition to a goal and one assist in two matches in the Spanish King’s Cup competition.
