US President Donald Trump announced that the US military carried out a “secret mission” that helped secure the passage of more than 100 million barrels of crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz, despite the turmoil that the vital sea lane has witnessed over the past months.
He said in a post on the Truth Social platform that the operation contributed to the safe passage of more than 200 commercial ships through the strait, adding that these efforts helped continue the flow of oil to global markets.

He stressed that the mission was carried out last month with the aim of supporting oil tankers and other cargo ships, considering that its success contributed to reducing the rise in oil prices.
Trump indicated that oil prices would have exceeded $200 per barrel had it not been for the continued flow of supplies through the Strait, explaining that American crude is currently trading near $90 per barrel.
The statements come at a time when JP Morgan Bank estimates indicate that quantities of oil were continuing to cross through the Strait of Hormuz despite the restrictions imposed on navigation.
The bank estimated that about two million barrels per day may have been leaving the region via tankers that had turned off their tracking systems, making the volume of actual flows higher than the officially shown numbers.
Constant tension
Last May, the United States announced a project to escort stranded oil tankers in the Gulf, before the plan was later suspended.
However, American officials confirmed that American forces continued to coordinate with commercial ships wishing to cross the strait safely, while denying the presence of direct escort for tankers.
For his part, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Washington is responding to attacks targeting commercial ships, warning that the use of drones against navigation may threaten environmental disasters in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important energy corridors in the world, as about a fifth of global oil and gas trade passes through it.
