The Pope said in a sermon delivered at the Sagrada Familia Cathedral in Barcelona, ”We cannot believe in Jesus and promote war. We cannot believe in Jesus and kill innocents.”
Regarding immigration issues, the Pope said before thousands of worshipers, in the presence of Spanish King Felipe VI and his wife, Queen Letizia, that Christians cannot “abandon those fleeing misery.”
The Pope’s statements seemed like a veiled reference to US President Donald Trump and his administration, which has been waging a war against Iran for more than 3 months, in which thousands have been killed and wounded, while Washington is tightening its measures to limit immigration.
The Pope was one of the most vocal critics of the war in the Middle East. He also called for embracing immigrants, preserving their dignity, and taking measures to facilitate their integration.
In April, the Pope denounced Trump’s threat to destroy Iran, describing it as “completely unacceptable,” and called on Americans to urge their lawmakers to “work for peace.”
Trump criticized the Pope, calling him “weak” in the fight against crime and “incompetent” in foreign policy, while the Pope said in response that his “moral duty” dictated that he speak out against the war.
Since the outbreak of the American-Israeli war on Iran at the end of last February, tensions and public debates have intensified between Trump and the Pope of the Vatican.
