Stories and video clips spread daily on social media platforms that receive massive interaction, and sometimes turn into “memes” or controversial situations, but some of them are not conveyed in their correct context or narratives are woven around them that are not based on fact.
Among these stories, the story of the gorilla “Kiyumasa”, a 13-year-old male who lives in the Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Garden in the city of Nagoya in Japan, recently emerged. In recent days, he has turned into a “star” on social media platforms after a video clip of him spread widely.
What is the story of the circulating video?

According to several accounts that published the video, it was said that the clip documents a dramatic moment captured directly after an argument or a simple dispute between Kiyomasa and the female gorilla who shares the enclosure. This framing led many to liken his condition to a man going through an existential crisis and rethinking his mistakes, to the flow of funny comments that portrayed him as if he was immersed in reviewing an endless “marital quarrel.”
In the clip, Kiyomasa appears performing movements of a remarkably human nature; He places his hand on his chin, then clasps his hands together, scratching his head, before staring into space with looks that appear desperate or wandering, which has established the image of the “thinking” gorilla immersed in contemplation among the observers.
The video received widespread interaction among the pioneers of the virtual world, and many commentators went on to describe Kiyomasa as experiencing an “existential crisis,” or like “a married man replaying a tape of a marital quarrel in his head,” asking: “Why did you get angry? And what did I say wrongly?!”
Pictures of Kiyomasa in his “philosophical” session spread widely, turning into fertile material for sarcastic comments and the making of “memes,” as users began writing their funny guesses about what was going on in his mind based on the way he was sitting and moving.
In a funnier twist, an X user decided to consult the AI Grok about Kiyomasa’s emotional “crisis”, asking him to give the gorilla advice.
Grok’s response was smart and sarcastic at the same time, as he addressed Kiyomasa saying:
“My advice to you, my gorilla friend: quarrels with your wife happen to even the most beautiful gorillas! Do not dwell on negative thoughts. Take a deep breath, go to her and apologize in your own way, perhaps by sharing your best banana with her or with a gentle touch. Communication and reconciliation are the secret to happiness in any relationship, as life is too short to waste it in disagreements.”
This interaction added a new layer of humor to the story, after animal behavior mixed with human imaginations and artificial intelligence responses in one scene.
Where lies the flaw in the circulating narrative?
Although Kiyomasa’s sitting position is real, and the scene in which he appears deep in meditation was actually posted two days ago, the link between this shot and a “family dispute” or “argument” with a female gorilla is not based on reliable information, but rather is context added by users who sought to amplify the dramatic and satirical side of the story.
As for the video that initially spread, it is also real, but it dates back to a different context and was published about five weeks ago, and was not linked to the story of the “marital dispute” as it was later promoted. Between the two real shots (the meditation session on the one hand, and the older video on the other), montages, reposts, and sarcastic comments intervened to form a new, more exciting narrative, but it does not necessarily reflect what actually happened inside the barn.
