People gathered in the streets of Belfast, Northern Ireland, on Tuesday evening in protest against a brutal stabbing the day before.

Some of the hundreds of protesters, many masked, who gathered in the city set fire to a bus and other vehicles, the BBC reports. Roads were also blocked and garbage cans were set on fire. In other cities too, people have joined anti-immigration protests.

A Sudanese man with refugee status has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder on another man on Monday. The attack was caught on film. The victim suffered injuries to his eyes, back and face after receiving multiple stab wounds.

The police and politicians have called for calm.

The suspected offender came to the UK in 2023. He will appear before a judge on Wednesday.
