Electric scooter accidents are increasing sharply, according to the Swedish Transport Agency’s new statistics.
Voi, who feels singled out, considers it somewhat unfair:
– The big problem is actually the private ones, says Voi’s policy manager Tina Ghasemi Liljekvist.
6,505.
So many people were injured in electric scooter accidents in Sweden last year.
This is a sharp increase compared to the year before, according to new statistics from the Swedish Transport Agency. The increase among children and young people is particularly clear.
But the electric scooter company Voi believes that the statistics do not tell the whole story.
– When talking about electric scooters, many people think of vehicles like ours. But the statistics also include private electric scooters, and that difference doesn’t really come out in the debate, says Voi’s policy manager Tina Ghasemi Liljekvist.
According to the Swedish Transport Agency, the number of people injured in electric scooter accidents increased by 28 percent in 2025 compared to the previous year.
At the same time, Vois’ own statistics point in the opposite direction. According to the company, the risk of accidents in their service decreased by 21 percent last year.
– And at the same time, the number of trips has increased by 55 percent.
Many accidents happen where Voi is not present
Tina Ghasemi Liljekvist also highlights that many accidents occur in municipalities where rentable electric scooters are not even available.
– The big problem is actually the private ones. They are often unregistered, uninsured and go at much too high speeds, she says.
She points out that Voi’s vehicles are speed-limited to 20 kilometers per hour, while some privately owned electric scooters, which are also used by children, can reach significantly higher speeds.
At the same time, Tina Ghasemi Liljekvist emphasizes that the security work continues.
– That is our highest priority. We have a clear vision that no serious accidents or deaths will occur with our vehicles by 2030.
