US President Donald Trump announced his intention to nominate his former personal lawyer, Todd Blanche, to assume the position of Secretary of Justice, after he temporarily led the ministry and strongly sought to implement the Republican president’s agenda.

Blanche quickly sought to establish himself as a preferred candidate for the permanent position after the dismissal of Pam Bondi in April, as he accelerated investigations against Trump’s opponents and announced the creation of a fund of nearly $1.8 billion to compensate the president’s allies for what he described as alleged political persecution.
This proposal sparked widespread controversy, prompting the Ministry of Justice to abandon it in a sudden retreat this week.
Bondi’s dismissal
Blanche was appointed to the Ministry of Justice as Deputy Attorney General, before being promoted after Bondi’s dismissal over what was considered her failure to prosecute Trump’s political opponents.
Blanche stressed that he was not seeking the position of attorney general, but he has shown through notable steps since taking office that he seeks to prove his loyalty to Trump.
Trump’s dismissal of the Minister of Justice from her position last April sparked a wave of comments on her performance during the period she spent at the head of the ministry, especially her role in publishing the files of billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted of sexual crimes.
During her tenure, Bondi became – as the website says – the most prominent face of the US government’s handling of files related to the investigation into the Epstein files, which Trump entrusted to her to implement his promise to publish them.
Although the Ministry of Justice was legally forced to publish millions of files related to Epstein in stages, it turned out that most of what it published was withheld or contained information that had previously been published. Bondi also made a mistake when she announced that a “list of Epstein’s clients” was on her desk, before the Ministry of Justice came back and confirmed that such a list did not exist.
Bondi’s dismissal – according to the New York Times – ended a turbulent 14-month period at the head of the Department of Justice, and Trump’s decision to dismiss her came after he expressed – in private sessions – his dissatisfaction with the way she dealt with the Jeffrey Epstein files, and her failure to prosecute his political opponents.
