Younis Mahmoud, President of the Iraqi Football Association, sent an emotional message to the players of the Iraqi national team before participating in the 2026 World Cup, which represents the first appearance of the Mesopotamian Lions in the World Cup after an absence of 40 years.

Younis Mahmoud appeared in a video clip shown to the players during the national team camp, saying: “I congratulate you on being on the final list that will represent Iraq in the World Cup after 40 years of absence.”

He added: “On behalf of the Iraqi Football Federation, we congratulate you all. I also extend my thanks to Mr. Graham, the commander of the Lions Battalion, and to the technical, administrative and medical staff, and to all members of the mission present in Spain.”

He continued: “It is a great honor for you to lead the Iraqi national team to the World Cup. Enjoy this moment, be creative on the field, and represent your country in the best possible way. We at the Iraqi Federation will provide you with everything you need in order to achieve success.”

He concluded his message by saying: “I am your brother, not the president of your union, and I will always be close to you, supportive and aiding you, until you appear in the best image befitting Iraq and its people.”

The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States of America, Mexico and Canada, with the participation of the Iraqi national team, which is in Group Nine, along with France, Senegal and Norway.
