A new federal court ruling sparked widespread political and cultural controversy in the United States after it ordered the removal of the name of US President Donald Trump from the building of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, as reported by the New York Times.
The newspaper explained – in an article written by Zach Montag and Julia Jacobs – that this step was considered a major legal setback for a project that Trump saw as part of his efforts to reshape American cultural institutions.

The ruling issued by Federal Judge Christopher Cooper was based on a law passed by Congress in 1964 following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which clearly stated that the Kennedy Center represents the only national memorial to the late president in the American capital and its surroundings.

The newspaper drew attention to 5 basic points included in the judge’s ruling, which angered the president and he responded to it.
1. Remove Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center
Federal Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that the name Donald Trump should be removed from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and he considered that the decision to rename the institution so that Trump’s name became part of its official identity conflicts with the purpose for which it was established and with the original will of Congress, stressing that changing the name can only be done through new legislation issued by Congress itself.
2. Stopping the plan to close the center for two years
The ruling halted the Trump administration’s plan to temporarily close the center in order to carry out large-scale renovations, and considered that the board had not adequately considered the legal, cultural and operational implications of the closure.
3. Confirming Congress’s authority over the institution
The ruling emphasized that the Kennedy Center was established by act of Congress as a memorial to the late President John F. Kennedy and therefore cannot be renamed or its essential nature changed by a unilateral decision of the Board or the Executive Branch.
4. Restoring the rights of some members of the Board of Trustees
The judge believed that the Board of Directors exceeded its powers when it stripped Representative Joyce Beatty of the right to vote on some decisions related to the center, considering that this measure lacked a legal basis.
5. Angry reaction from Trump
Trump strongly attacked the ruling and the judge, and considered the decision political and unfair. He also announced that he might seek to return the entire management of the center to Congress, stressing that he would not continue participating in the project if he was not allowed to implement his own vision for the institution.
The article stated that the roots of the conflict go back to last December, when the center’s board of directors, which Trump reconstituted after his return to the White House, voted to add Trump’s name to the institution.
The new letters were quickly installed on the building’s main facade, and the revised name was included on the center’s website, in official publicity materials, and even in the television broadcast of the annual Kennedy Honors Gala, the cultural institution’s highlight, the authors said.
However, this step raised widespread objections within American artistic and cultural circles, and indeed a number of artists, donors, and the public expressed their rejection of what they considered the politicization of a national cultural institution with historical symbolism, and the controversy led to the cancellation of a number of artistic events and programs, as well as the decline of some financial contributions.

A new legal battle
It is expected – according to the authors – that the ruling will turn into a new legal battle, as the center’s officials announced their intention to appeal the decision and defend the Board of Directors’ right to honor Trump, considering that the president has an important role in supporting the institution and saving it financially and administratively, but critics of the move believe that the issue is related to preserving the center’s historical identity more than a political dispute.
The ruling also shed light on the nature of the center’s management during recent years, and the judge criticized the way in which the decision to close was taken, noting that the council relied on limited and biased information, and that it did not adequately listen to the experts responsible for the technical programs, fundraising, and legal aspects of the institution, and called for any future plans to be re-examined independently and professionally before proceeding with their implementation.
The Kennedy Center case represents a new test of the relationship between the White House, Congress and the judiciary at a time of intense political polarization.
Although the court stopped the closure decision, restoring things to what they were will not be easy – according to the article – because the center has already begun preparations to close its doors, and has witnessed widespread layoffs of employees and the cancellation of a number of major artistic performances, and plans for the cultural season for the years 2026 and 2027 have also been disrupted. Observers fear that these unrest will continue, even if the closure project is officially withdrawn.
The issue has dimensions that go beyond a mere dispute over the name of a cultural building, because it reflects the broader conflict ongoing in the United States over the role of politics in managing cultural and national institutions, and the limits of the president’s authority to reshape these institutions according to his vision. It also represents a new test of the relationship between the White House, Congress, and the judiciary at a stage witnessing severe political polarization.
Currently, the future of the Kennedy Center remains suspended between the course of a possible judicial appeal, the position of Congress, and the institution’s ability to restore its administrative and financial stability after months of controversy and divisions that placed it at the heart of one of the most striking cultural and political battles in the United States in recent years.
