US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the end of the official assignment of Ambassador Tom Barrack as a special US envoy to Syria, stressing at the same time that he will continue to play a central role within the administration of US President Donald Trump to supervise the files of Syria and Iraq.

Rubio explained that the experience gained by Barak and his extensive relationships in the region make him a pivotal element in the administration’s strategy towards the Middle East during the next stage.

The announcement came at the end of the specified assignment for Barak, who assumed the position in May 2025 in addition to his work as US ambassador to Türkiye.

Barak played a pivotal role in formulating Washington’s strategy toward the new Syrian government led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, including efforts to ease sanctions and mediate between Damascus and the SDF.
