A young Brazilian player assaulted a referee during a match held in the 12th round of the local U-20 youth league.

During stoppage time of the first half of the match between Corinthians and Vasco da Gama, Luis Gustavo Bahia, the former’s player, received a yellow card, which was the player’s second, and it came after a foul he committed against his rival Samuel, and thus the arena referee, Gustavo Alencar Rodriguez, issued a red card for him.

The expelled player showed signs of extreme anger and dissatisfaction, and objected to the decision before the referee pushed his chest, while his teammates intervened in an attempt to calm him down, according to what was reported by the Brazilian network “G Globo” (ge.globo).

But the player continued his strong protests against the refereeing staff even as he left the field, as appeared in videos posted on social media.

The player said as he left the field: “This is a farce,” before directing his words to the referee: “Are you mocking me? There are no children here,” before his colleague Caragua put his hand on his mouth to silence him.

The young player quickly apologized for his behavior after the match, and published a brief statement on his official Instagram account in which he confirmed that he bears full responsibility for his behavior.

Luis Gustavo Bahia wrote: “Unfortunately, I and my team were subjected to arbitration injustice, but nothing justifies my behavior towards the referee. I bear full responsibility for my behavior.”

He added: “I will take this situation as a lesson to learn from it. We will continue to focus on our goals, work and develop day after day. Everything goes.”

The match ended with Vasco da Gama winning 1-0, causing Corinthians to suffer their fourth defeat in the Brazilian Youth League, compared to 5 wins and 3 draws, placing them in eighth place in the standings with 18 points.
