A fight for the World Boxing Organization’s (UBO) light heavyweight world championship, a subsidiary organization, has turned into a violent mass assault.

Last Saturday, the Turkish city of Trabzon witnessed an incident described as “unparalleled” in the history of boxing, as clashes occurred following a confrontation between local boxer Amirkhan Calhan (who has a record of 7 victories and one defeat, including 4 by knockout) and Russian boxer Sergey Gorokhov (who has a record of 17 victories, 11 defeats and two draws, including 12 by knockout).

The clashes began in the second round, when Gorokhov achieved a knockout victory after he succeeded in knocking down his Turkish opponent twice during this round.

After announcing victory, the Russian boxer celebrated with his team in their private corner, before heading towards the opponent’s corner to greet him and check on him, but he was suddenly pushed by a member of the Turkish boxer’s crew, according to what the Spanish newspaper Marca reported.

After this incident, a group of more than 40 people stormed the ring, attacked Gorokhov and his coach, and severely beat them.

Amid the general confusion, fans threw plastic chairs and those in the ring used them as assault tools, according to the same source.

In a detailed statement issued by Gorokhov hours later from inside a Turkish hospital, he recounted the details of the clashes, saying: “We are in the hospital now. My coach, Ismail, was injured in the head and is currently undergoing an MRI. I was the least affected because the boxing gloves helped me protect myself.”

Gorokhov described what happened as a “severe beating” that followed his brilliant victory, criticizing the behavior of the crowd, which he described as “very bad.”

Gorokhov also confirmed that the team left the ring under heavy police guard directly to their hotel rooms.

On the other hand, despite expressing his deep regret over the incident that occurred after the end of the fight, Turkish boxer Amirkhan Kalhan sharply rebuked Gorokhov’s crew, pointing out that their behavior was what sparked the situation.

Callahan asked disapprovingly: “What right does the Russian team coach have to come to us at that moment? He came running and made that move.”

He added, “In a charged environment like this, a single spark can light the fuse,” indicating that the Russian coach’s approach to the corner of the defeated team was the reason behind the crowd’s reaction, as he described it.
