FIFA announced on Sunday that it is in talks with the game’s local federations to increase prize money for all 48 teams participating in the 2026 World Cup.
The proposal must be approved at the FIFA Council meeting, which will be held on Tuesday before the 76th FIFA Congress in Vancouver.

In December, FIFA announced that the prize money for this year’s World Cup would be 50 percent higher than the previous edition, reaching $655 million, after agreeing on record financial funding for the tournament worth $655 million.

Despite this, FIFA told Reuters that the prize money on offer will increase, as FIFA’s revenues are expected to exceed $11 billion in the current four-year cycle from 2023 to
2026.
A FIFA spokesman said: “FIFA can confirm that it is in talks with federations around the world to increase available revenue.
He continued: “This includes a proposed increase in financial contributions to all teams qualifying for the 2026 World Cup and in development financing available to all 211 member federations.”
He added: “The 2026 World Cup will be groundbreaking in terms of its financial contribution to the global football community, and FIFA is proud to be in its strongest financial position ever to serve the global game through the FIFA Forward programme.”
The bulk of FIFA’s initial financing package for the tournament to be held in North America, $655 million, was allocated for performance-based payments to the 48 teams participating in the finals.
FIFA’s announcement in December regarding the World Cup’s prize money stated that the champion would receive $50 million and the runner-up would receive $33 million, while the 16 teams that did not qualify from the group stage would receive $9 million.
In addition, each team that qualifies for the finals will receive $1.5 million to cover preparation costs.
FIFA’s annual report for 2025 stated that 93 percent of the total budgeted revenues had already been contracted by the end of 2025 thanks to the success of the first edition of the expanded Club World Cup, which was held in the United States last year with the participation of 32 teams.
The 2026 World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
