The Qatari Al-Rayyan team was crowned champion of the Arabian Gulf Football Champions League, for the first time, after defeating its Saudi counterpart, Al-Shabab, in the final match today, Thursday, with a score of 3-0.
After a negative first half, Al Rayyan opened the scoring in the 61st minute through Garcia, who followed up on Thiago Silva’s cross with a goal past Brazilian goalkeeper Marcelo Grohe.
The Qatari team succeeded in increasing its lead in the 78th minute with a usual goal from Mitrovic, who followed a cross from Rodrigo Moreno with a perfect header into the net, bringing back memories of scoring against Grohe when they played face to face for Al Hilal and Al Ittihad shirts.
Al-Shabab rushed to try to reduce the gap after realizing that they had nothing to lose, which left spaces in the back line, as Guedes was able to add the third for Al-Rayyan from a quick counter after Mitrovic’s pass in the 81st minute.
Al Rayyan achieved the great victory to win its second championship in less than a month, days after achieving the Qatar Stars Cup title by defeating Muaither 2-0 in the final match.
Al Rayyan joined its compatriot Al Sadd, who had won the title once before in 1991, surpassing the achievement of its compatriots Al Arabi, Qatar and Al Khor, who reached the final on 3 different occasions but did not achieve the championship.
