Scotland are out of the World Cup.

Union captain Steve Clarke, 62, resigns immediately.

– It has been a real honor, he says.

After Croatia’s victory against Ghana, Scotland could no longer be one of the top eight group threes.

That meant the WC adventure was over.

Half an hour after the fact, the Scottish Football Association announced that union captain Steve Clarke is stepping down after seven years in the post.

– The most emotional part of this farewell concerns my players. Without them we would never have experienced the memories we have made since 2019. They deserve all the praise and appreciation they receive and it has been a real honor to coach them,” Clarke told the association’s website.

Clarke took Scotland to the country’s first World Cup in 28 years. As recently as a month ago, he signed a new four-year deal.

Scotland won the opening match against Haiti 1–0. Then they lost against Morocco with 0–1 and against Brazil with 0–3.

– Although we are all disappointed to have gone out of the WC already in the group stage, we must not forget the progress made during Steve’s seven years at the helm, says the association’s chairman Ian Maxwell.
