The state of uncertainty continues regarding the future of French coach Hervé Renard with the Tunisian national team, after the “Carthage Eagles” adventure in the 2026 World Cup ended with their exit from the group stage following a 3-1 defeat against the Netherlands, in the team’s last match in the tournament.

Despite assuming the job in exceptional circumstances during the World Cup, Renard has not yet decided his next destination, stressing that all options remain open to him.

The French coach said, in statements reported by Agence France-Presse: “I came for this tournament, and now I will be free to choose the best project for the future,” without revealing whether the Tunisian Football Federation had offered him an extension of his contract.

Renard added: “I received a wonderful reception in circumstances that were very difficult. I was aware from the beginning of the scale of the challenge, but we learn even from complex experiences. It was a very special experience.”

In a statement to beIN Sports, the French coach answered about the possibility of him continuing to lead the Tunisian national team in the context of a long-term development project, saying: “Of course yes, there is no need to reject something like this. I must first respect the people, so I must wait, then talk to the officials and we will see what happens.”

The Tunisian Federation postpones the decision

For his part, an official in the Tunisian Football Federation confirmed, in statements to Agence France-Presse, that Renard’s future as head of the technical staff will be discussed in the coming days, indicating that the Federation needs a period to evaluate the team’s participation in the World Cup before making the final decision.

The source explained: “We will need two or three weeks to evaluate the team’s results in the World Cup, and then we will decide the coach’s file.”

A temporary mission…and an unknown future

Renard took over as coach of the Tunisian national team temporarily following the dismissal of coach Sabri Lamouchi, following the heavy loss to Sweden, 5-1, at the opening of the “Carthage Eagles” campaign in the World Cup.

Although the French coach was not required to achieve specific results during his short mission, in return, he did not receive any guarantees regarding his continuation after the end of the tournament.

Renard’s future remains linked to the outcome of the upcoming consultations between him and the Tunisian Federation, awaiting the final decision that will determine the identity of the “Carthage Eagles” coach during the next stage.
