The Syrian Civil Defense was able to control all the fires that broke out in Al-Hasakah Governorate, northeast of the country, last week.
According to the Civil Defense, the fires were extinguished in about 35 locations with the participation of more than 40 firefighting teams, without recording any casualties, despite significant material damage to oil wells in the Rumailan area.
Al Jazeera correspondent Muhammad Hassan transferred the photo from the village of Nafkir in the western Qamishli countryside, where massive fires caused material losses, noting that the farmers had harvested their crops before the fire broke out, which destroyed the hay and straw.
According to the reporter, the fires that broke out yesterday, Tuesday, caused damage to some oil wells in the Rumailan area in the countryside of Hasakah Governorate.
He also indicated that a new fire broke out in the village of Tal Al-Shaer and is still ongoing. It is not known whether the fire was in crops they had harvested or not, and he attributed the spread of the fire to high wind speeds.
According to the reporter, the Syrian Civil Defense confirmed control over the areas affected by the fire, starting from Al-Shaddadi in the Hasakah countryside, then Tal Hamis and Tal Barak, all the way to Al-Yarubiyah, where the Syrian-Iraqi border is, in addition to the countryside of Qamishli, Al-Rumaylan, and Derik Al-Malikiyah.
Regarding the causes of the outbreak of fires, Al Jazeera’s correspondent spoke about their connection to the current period known as the harvest season for agricultural crops, explaining that during the past years and throughout the years of the revolution, some fires were arson and other times were not arson as a result of throwing cigarette butts or some sparks from the combines harvesting the agricultural fields.
Figures obtained by the “Syria Now” platform from the Directorate of Media and Communication of the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management revealed that the total fires to which the Ministry responded in the period from May 15 to June 19 amounted to 5,226 fires, of which 1,156 fires affected agricultural crops, an indication of the start of the fire season, which is now recurring every year.
According to the people who participated in putting out a large fire that affected the crops of 13 agricultural fields in the countryside of the city of Ras Ain in Hasakah, along with the Syrian Civil Defense teams, the strong winds contributed to the spread of the fires from the village of Umm Ashba to the village of Al-Mubarakiya, causing material damage in large areas.
Al-Hasakah Governorate is considered the first food basket in Syria, as it is called in many sources. After 2015, it turned into an arena of regional and international conflict, due to its border location with Turkey and Iraq and its inclusion of oil and gas resources, and witnessed repeated skirmishes between Assad regime forces and SDF forces.
