If Sweden plays in the round of 16 in the World Cup, an old acquaintance will be on the plane to the USA.
Olof Mellberg, 48, is then back as an expert in SVT.
It has been messy for SVT and the experts during the soccer World Cup.
Just before the WC, there was information that Olof Mellberg would only be in the USA for a little while. The reason was that things started to move on the coaching front.
For Magnus Eriksson, it was a quick jolt when he had to apply for a visa to the United States. Mellberg was in place for about a week before Eriksson replaced him.
Now the roles are reversed.
Not back after the wedding
Eriksson travels home on July 1 for his wedding, which is around the time the round of 16 is played.
If and when Sweden plays such a game is unclear, it could be both before and after the date of Eriksson’s return home. But if Sweden goes on, he will be replaced.
– We had discussions with Olof Mellberg today. With all certainty, he will go back to the USA if Sweden goes to eighth, says Marcus Törngren, event manager at SVT Sport.
He only goes there if Sweden plays in the round of 16?
– Exactly. We also have Glenn (Strömberg) there as an expert. Olof only goes there if Sweden goes there.
Calmer on the coaching front
So has Mellberg’s situation changed a bit?
– Olof has had discussions about his continued coaching career and there was little focus on it at the beginning of the WC. Now it’s calmer on that front and now he has opened up about a possible round of 16 and that’s fun.
He can’t change again?
– You never know what happens in life, but it seems positive as it looks now.
And Magnus isn’t coming back at all?
– No, he doesn’t. One does not want to prevent him from a wedding.
