Starmer resigns as Prime Minister of Britain news

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Monday his resignation as prime minister amid a division in the ruling Labor Party, while his rival for party leadership, Andy Burnham, was quick to confirm his intention to succeed him.

Starmer said – in a press conference at the government headquarters in Downing Street in London – that he informed the king of his decision, stressing that he will remain in his position until the election of a new leader of the Labor Party next September.

He added that he took the decision to resign in response to the voices calling on him to do so within the Labor Party, pledging a smooth transfer of power.

He added that he will ask his party to set a timetable for choosing a successor to him, with nominations opening on July 9, and closing on the 16th of the same month before the summer vacation.

He stressed that he inherited a politically bankrupt party, and that some considered that the party had ended, saying that he had proven to those who said that exactly the opposite.

The resigned Prime Minister continued that his government restored confidence in the economy, defense, and national security, and presented indicators supporting what he considered to be the successes achieved by his government in several areas.

Keir Starmer has become the sixth British Prime Minister to leave office in the last ten years.

Starmer’s succession

In a post on the “X” platform, Representative Andy Burnham announced that he intends to run for the presidency of the Labor Party to succeed the resigned party leader.

Burnham called for an orderly and responsible transition, stressing that he would run for office “as part of this process.”

For his part, former Health Minister Wes Streeting – who had previously announced his intention to seek to succeed Starmer – announced his support for Burnham, which suggests that the latter may win the leadership of the party and the presidency of the government without any significant competition.

The British Prime Minister’s resignation comes less than two years after his landslide victory in the elections, amid an expanding circle of opponents in the Labor Party, a sharp decline in his popularity, and the ruling party’s loss in the local elections about 6 weeks ago.
