On Monday, the government of Argentine President Javier Milley prevented journalists from entering the presidential palace for the third day, amid criticism of violations of freedom of expression and the right to access information.
Milley – who is considered a strong ally of US President Donald Trump – has a turbulent relationship with the media, to which he has repeatedly directed harsh insults since he took office in December 2023.
The government had prevented journalists accredited to cover events in the presidential palace from entering it last Thursday and Friday, under the pretext of investigating allegations of “illegal spying.”
The Presidential Security Service is investigating two journalists from the Todo Noticias channel on charges of filming in prohibited areas inside the palace without a permit allowing them to do so. The two journalists say that they obtained permission to photograph, and that the areas that were photographed were frequently visited by children during school trips.
Denunciation
The Argentine Media Association condemned the ban, noting that it “directly affects freedom of expression and the right to information, which are two basic pillars of the democratic system.”
The newspaper “Ampito Financiero”, which specializes in financial matters, also sought an urgent court ruling to force the government to give it access to the information.
