STENUNGSUND. A young man was stabbed to death during a large brawl on a beach in Hawaii last night.

The following evening, life goes on as usual on the beach.

– The first thing you thought about this morning was if there was someone you have a connection to those affected, says Nicklas Björn, 45, who is going for an evening swim with his son.

The quick version

It is easy to understand why the beach in the Bohuslän town was named after the tropical island of Hawaii. The sea sparkles turquoise and blue while the islands stretch out all around.

Hilda Klingstedt, 15, and Liss Larsson, 16, are heading down to the beach from the parking lot. They are not here to bathe.

Not today.

– We thought to see if there is a memorial site or something else left here, they say.

– It is terrible, really a shame that it has happened, they continue.

Died of the injuries

There is still much that is unclear about what happened here at the Hawaii beach last night. The police are secretive and none of the bathers seem to know.

In any case, it is clear that a man in his 20s died at Kungälv hospital, where he was taken together with another injured man by a private car.

And that two men of the same age are now suspected of murder and attempted murder after a group of people started fighting here during the night.

The police made a find

Down by the beach, happy children’s squeals and splashes drown out the roar of traffic from Tjörnbron. Grillos spread across the volleyball court. Mixed with the smell of the sea on the rocks in Bohuslän. A group of canoeists glide by while a few other summer revelers jump from piers.

“There are usually a lot of people here in the evenings. Last night it was 22 degrees, so I can imagine that there were many people here then,” says Lars-Inge Berntsson, 52. Photo: Björn Larsson Rosvall

Last night it looked different. At the time, the police had set up large barriers from the parking lot down towards the sea so that the forensics could work in peace. They found traces and were able to find the two suspects during the morning.

But Hilda Klingstedt or Liss Larsson will not find any lit candles or flowers.

Nor any traces of the night’s fight or the large police cordons. Everything is completely gone.

“Sick”

Many of those stretching out on the sun-warmed rocks don’t even know about the murder.

– Is that why there are so few people here today? How crazy that it happened right here, says a man in his 30s from Gothenburg who is sitting with his friends and listening to music from a speaker between dips.

Others who visit the beach during the evening have heard about what happened.

– But I don’t know more than what is in the newspaper, says a woman who is sunbathing some distance away.

– It’s really a tragic event and the fact that it happened right here where you grew up makes it feel surreal, says her friend.

The police will return

Suddenly the calm is broken by a police bus rolling onto the footpath and away towards the peninsula next to Hawaii. Christopher Hansson, external commander of the police in Fyrbodal, jumps out and goes into the forest together with a man in civilian clothes. They scout up towards a villa as they talk.

– We are working on investigative technical measures, says Christopher Hansson later.

He is otherwise secretive.

– We are working hard on the investigation, he continues, before jumping back into the police bus.

Spread rumours

Nicklas Björn, 45, and Anton Björn, 13, are on their way to their evening swim. They are often here to swim and barbecue.

– It makes this feel unfunny. The first thing you thought about this morning was whether it was someone you have a connection with who was affected, says Nicklas Björn, 45, who also has a 24-year-old son.

Nicklas Björn is also a football coach in Stenungsunds IF.

– So I also thought about that, if there is someone who has a connection to the club, but it doesn’t seem to be the case, says Nicklas Björn.

Now the rumors are spreading among teenagers, as an adult it is important to keep up and listen.

– As an adult, you have to think soberly and listen to what the police say, Nicklas Björn continues and walks off towards the sparkling sea.
