Followers’ anger: “Extremely disrespectful” • JLC’s response
JLC paid SEK 30,000 for a dinner that they compare to poo and sperm.
Now the YouTube group is receiving sharp criticism from followers who believe that the video they posted from the restaurant is a mockery of Japanese culture.
“Unprofessional and downright distasteful to sit and make faces and share a bad tone when the chefs are in the same room,” writes one person.
In one Youtube video from Tokyo, the comedy group JLC tests both cheap and expensive dining experiences.
Among other things, they go to a two-star Michelin restaurant that costs 30,000 excluding drinks. Then you get your own room with several private chefs and staff who look after you.
– It will be the most expensive thing we have ever done, says Lucas Simonsson34.
Right from the start, they are skeptical of the dishes that come in. Jonas Fagerström35, compares a dish with semen and Carl Deman33, says he hopes there is a McDonalds nearby.
He also says that he would have preferred to go to the toilet and stay there so as not to come back.
“I want to throw up”
JLC is constantly in the same small room as the chefs and staff. A chef explains to them that it is Japanese culture to fry whole small fish and eat them.
– It damn tastes like you sucked on fir needles, says Déman after trying it.
They also say there is poo in one of the dishes.
When they try snail liver, they grimace wildly.
– I feel like I want to vomit, says Déman.
Simonsson apologizes for being whiny and negative, but the others disagree with him.
– We have not complained, we have only said that this is not very good. We’re honest and I think we’re damn brave to push this and test everything. We would have been whiny and negative if we hadn’t dared to test, but we’re sitting here testing the culture and imbibing this, says Déman.
Criticism of JLC after the video from Tokyo
Now the group receives sharp criticism. In the comments section under the YouTube video, the complaints from the followers pour in.
“This was actually the first time I was really disappointed by a JLC video. If you go to Japan, book a Michelin restaurant and spend huge sums on an experience that very few people ever get the chance to experience, then I think you should also show some respect for the culture and the food,” writes one person.
“No, my god I got sick to my stomach and had to turn off the video. To behave like that in a restaurant with staff who are really doing their job is just sick,” writes another.
“This was just hard to watch, disrespectful,” writes a third.
Many comments are about members of the JLC openly grimacing when the staff and chefs are in the same room.
“Of course you don’t have to like everything, but I still think you can show a little more respect by holding back grimaces, tone of voice and body language when you’re sitting there.”
“Unprofessional and downright distasteful to sit and make faces and share a bad tone when the chefs are standing in the same room and doing their best.”
“Absolutely if you didn’t like the food, but sitting and making faces all lunch when all the staff can see you is extremely disrespectful.”
Several followers write that they are disappointed with JLC as they perceive them as disrespectful to the country.
“It will be a mockery of Japanese food culture,” writes one person.
“Japan is a very respected country and the way you behave at the dinner table and all the faces you make… Ugh, poor staff, those who have struggled so hard with the food and then you behave like that,” writes another.
JLC replies: “What the hell is the problem?”
In the latest episode of JLC’s podcast “Between Heaven and Earth”, the trio addresses the sharp criticism. And Lucas Simonsson questions the reactions.
– What the hell is the problem? he says.
Jonas Fagerström answers:
– We complain too much. People think we should just eat duck bladder and not complain, and eat whole fried fish with bladder and all that shit.
They emphasize that they actually thought the food was disgusting – and that they wanted to be honest about that in the clip. At the same time, Carl Déman addresses the criticism that they have allegedly been disrespectful to the staff. He explains that it is taken out of context.
– What is important for us to get across is that the staff laughed a little at us because they knew that this is very local and Japanese. They had almost no European guests in these restaurants, he says and continues:
– They thought it was also exciting to see if we would think it was good, or if we could eat it.
According to Carl Déman, the trio gave a lot of praise to the service after the restaurant visit, and the staff in turn should have given gifts to the comedy group.
