The Sudanese army announced the restoration of control over the strategic city of Kurmuk in the Blue Nile region, southeast of the country, following battles it described as “fierce and fierce” with the Rapid Support Forces, in a new field development within the ongoing confrontations between the two parties.
The army said, in a statement, that its forces retook the city “forcefully and powerfully,” stressing that it inflicted heavy losses on the Rapid Support Forces in life and equipment, while Kurmuk is considered one of the cities of strategic importance and rich in minerals in the region.
Following the announcement, a member of the Sudanese army called on the members of the Rapid Support Forces to take advantage of the amnesty previously announced by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, saying that the city of Kurmuk had “returned to the embrace of the homeland” after an absence of three and a half months, and calling on the members of the Rapid Support Forces to leave the fighting and return to the homeland.
In parallel with the military developments, the city of Damazin, the capital of the Blue Nile region, witnessed gatherings of hundreds of residents in front of the headquarters of the 4th Infantry Division, to celebrate the announcement of the recovery of Kurmuk, and to express their support for the armed forces.
The participants raised slogans in support of the army, including “One Army, One People,” in a scene that reflected the state of popular support that accompanied the announcement of control of the city.
The recovery of Kurmuk, according to the Sudanese army’s announcement, comes within the framework of the military operations it is carrying out to restore areas that were under the control of the Rapid Support Forces, amid continuing battles in a number of states of the country.
