At the beginning of each year, the Italian city of Venice turns into an open stage of masks, costumes and music, in one of the oldest and most famous festivals in the world: the Venice Carnival. In the 2026 edition, whose activities extend until February 17, the carnival returns with a slogan inspired by the Olympic spirit, entitled “Olympus – The Origins of the Game,” coinciding with Italy’s hosting of the Winter Olympic Games.

Despite the stereotype that links Carnival with luxurious parties and expensive historical palaces, enjoying its atmosphere does not necessarily require a large budget.

The city is celebrating

In Venice, Carnival is not limited to closed halls, but rather is vibrant in alleys, squares and canals. All you have to do is wear a simple mask and walk around Piazza San Marco, to find yourself among dozens of masked revelers from all over the world, taking pictures and exchanging roles in a scene similar to a live theatrical performance.

Masks you make with your own hands

One of the most popular activities during the carnival is the Venetian mask-making workshops, where many art workshops allow visitors, of all ages, to design their own papier-mache masks and decorate them with colors and decorations. An experience that combines art and memory, and gives the visitor a personal souvenir from the heart of the event.

Tours tell the story

For those who prefer the cultural aspect, the city offers special carnival walking tours, which take participants on a journey through history, from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, stopping by famous figures such as Giacomo Casanova. These tours are often led by guides in costumes, and conclude with Italian coffee and traditional Carnival candy.

Free offers and unrepeatable scenes

Streets and canals are transformed into open spaces for performances, boat parades and live music, all events open to the public without tickets. This is what gives the carnival its public character, and makes the visitor a participant in the experience, not just a spectator.

When is the best time?

The last days of Carnival, especially the weekends, usually witness a peak in attendance and events. As for those looking for a quieter experience, it is preferable to visit Venice during the first days of the festival.

Carnival has a long history

The Venice Carnival dates back to the Middle Ages, before it stopped for long periods, then was officially revived in 1979. Since then, it has become one of the pillars of cultural tourism in Italy, and an annual event that attracts millions of visitors.
