The Public Prosecution Office in Paris opened an investigation against the backdrop of racist statements made by a Paraguayan senator against soccer team captain Kylian Mbappe, on charges of public insult and public incitement to hatred or violence.
It was reported on Tuesday that “the Public Prosecution Office in Paris immediately opened an investigation,” following a complaint filed by the French Football Federation, which was received by the National Pole for Combating Online Hate on Tuesday, thus confirming information reported by RMC and RTL radio stations.
Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amaria launched a violent attack on Mbappe after her country’s national team lost to France 0-1 on Saturday in the eighth-final of the World Cup in North America, following a difficult match that included many mistakes and unsportsmanlike behavior on the part of the Paraguayans.
“Blue” was eventually able to win and qualify for the quarter-finals thanks to a penalty kick scored by Mbappe in the second half.
The opposition representative in the Paraguayan Senate wrote on the X platform, “This idiot did not even learn to write. Instead of his mother’s milk, he was fed coconuts, and the most cultured creatures he had ever heard of were chimpanzees.”
This angered the French player, who received support at all levels.
The Paris Public Prosecution indicated that charges of public insult and public incitement to hatred or violence are aggravated “when they are based on the origin, ethnicity, nationality, race or religion, in reality or hypothetically, of the victim.”
She stressed that these crimes could be punished by up to one year in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros.
The prosecution added that on the occasion of the World Cup, “the Central Office for Combating Online Hate established a monitoring system for racist statements that may be published online,” in order “to be able to open investigations as quickly as necessary when necessary.”
