The three new cubs are seven weeks old and the second litter for a pair of leopards, which belong to the endangered Persian leopard.
According to the non-profit foundation Nordens Ark, which runs the zoological park of the same name in Hunnebostrand, the cubs are an important addition to the international conservation work for the highly threatened leopard subspecies.
Fewer than 1,100 individuals of the Persian leopard are estimated to remain in the wild. The majority of them live in Iran, but they are also found in, among others, Armenia, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan.
The leopard cubs have now taken their first steps outside the den.
“The cubs have so far stayed close to their mother in the den, but now they are starting to explore the enclosure and develop their natural behaviors,” says Julie Hjelm Kristensen, animal keeper at Nordens Ark, in a comment.
