A hotel housing more than 100 Venezuelans who had just been deported from the United States collapsed in last week’s quake. Now many of them are missing, reports CNN.
The plane from Miami landed in Caracas on Wednesday morning. On board were 146 Venezuelans, seven of them children, who had been deported from the United States.
The group was taken to a hotel in the coastal town of La Guaira. Just hours later, the two earthquakes struck, leaving the region in ruins and killing at least 1,700 people. The hotel with the deportees collapsed, according to CNN.
Now many of them are believed to be buried in rubble. Luis Armando Dasilva is waiting for word about his sister Amanda Donizete, who he hasn’t heard from since she was put on the plane in Miami.
– They (local authorities) do not answer where she is. If she is in the hospital or the morgue, the brother told CNN.
Since October, the US has been deporting hundreds of Venezuelans every week.
