The Venice Film Festival announced that American star George Clooney was awarded the Golden Lion Award for Overall Artistic Achievement, in an honor that celebrates a long and diverse artistic career during which he combined acting, directing and production, and established his presence as one of the most prominent names in American and international cinema over many decades.
The festival organizers praised Clooney, describing him as “a complete artist with a captivating presence,” stressing that his career as an actor, director, and producer left a clear mark on contemporary cinema.
Clooney is scheduled to receive the award during the festival, which is hosted by the Lido district in Venice from September 2 to 12, 2026.

George Clooney expressed his happiness with this honor, saying: “I lived many exceptional moments in Venice, and this festival undoubtedly remains the closest to my heart, so receiving the Golden Lion Award represents a great honor for me.” He added jokingly: “It might also mean I’m getting old, but I don’t mind.”
Festival Director Alberto Barbera said in a statement that George Clooney – as an actor, director and producer – is an example of an integrated artist with a remarkable presence, who was able to transform his passion for cinema into one of the most prominent careers in contemporary cinema. He added that Clooney combines the brilliance of classic stars, high professionalism, and modern sensitivity, which was reflected in his ability to move between different cinematic genres with rare flexibility.
Barbera pointed out that Clooney made his way into acting in small roles in television series and B-movies, before achieving his major breakthrough through the series “Emergency Room” (ER), an experience that, according to the statement, contributed to honing an actor capable of imposing his presence on the screen with clear spontaneity.
He added that Clooney has a talent that makes his characters appear convincing and likable at the same time, and he concluded his statement by emphasizing that Clooney’s charm is not based only on his image as a star, but is fundamentally linked to his credibility, as his appeal does not depend only on appearance and external presence.
A statement issued by the Venice Biennale Foundation, which is supervising the organization of the festival, said that Clooney combines the brilliance of the stars of the good old days with great professionalism, pointing out that he moved between multiple cinematic genres with rare flexibility, from war films, such as “Three Kings” and “Syriana”, to thrillers such as “Michael Clayton”, high-end comedies such as “Ocean 11” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”, and science fiction such as “Gravity” and “Solaris”, all the way to comedies of a similar nature. Humanitarians like The Descendants and Jay Kelly.
The statement added that Clooney succeeded in each of these films in adapting his performance to suit the nature of each work, without losing his special features as an actor who combines sarcasm and sadness, gravity and contemplation, intelligence and the ability to reach unexpected depth.
In addition, Clooney did the same in the nine films he directed after moving behind the camera, works that reflect a strict and generous vision of cinema, according to the statement. He pointed to films he directed, such as “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind,” “March 15,” and “Suburbicon,” which are considered ambitious films that departed from the rules and traditions prevailing in Hollywood cinema.
The statement indicated that honoring Clooney in Venice is not only related to his cinematic works, but also includes his public image and his humanitarian career, as the films he directed, in addition to his presence in the public sphere, reflect another aspect of his personality, represented by his preoccupation with social and humanitarian issues, which has made him one of the most prominent names in the world of entertainment today.
The American star has been one of the faces associated with the Venice Festival for years, as the festival witnessed the screening of a number of his works, including “Out of Sight” in 1998 and “Good Night and Good Luck” in 2005. Clooney has also returned to Venice in recent years more than once, as his last session witnessed the premiere of his film “Jay Kelly,” while in the 2024 session he appeared on the red carpet alongside Brad Pitt during the world premiere of their movie “Wolfs.” Clooney’s name was also associated with the festival on other occasions, including his attendance with his wife, Amal Clooney, which made him one of the usual names in Venice and on the international scene of film festivals.
The festival celebrates Clooney, who is 65 years old, as one of only three people in the history of the Academy Awards to be nominated in six different categories over the course of their career: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
During his career, he also won two Oscars, the first for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the movie “Syriana” in 2005, and the second as a co-producer alongside Ben Affleck and Grant Heslov in the movie “Argo,” which won the Best Picture award in 2013.
In his most recent artistic career, in 2025, Clooney received a nomination for a Tony Award for his first appearance on the Broadway stage, through the theatrical version of the movie “Good Night and Good Luck,” in which he played the character of Edward R. Moro.
The Golden Lion Award is the highest honor offered by the Venice Film Festival, and is usually given to filmmakers and actors whose works have left a prominent cultural and artistic impact. The 83rd session of the festival is scheduled to be held from September 2 to 12, with the official program of participating films to be announced on July 23.
