China said on Sunday that its naval forces will conduct joint exercises with its Russian counterpart in the waters and airspace off the coast of the Chinese city of Qingdao this month, without specifying a specific date.
The Chinese Ministry of Defense said in a statement: “After the end of the exercises, some forces from both sides will head to certain areas in the Pacific Ocean to conduct joint naval patrols.”
The ministry added that these exercises are conducted annually “with the aim of jointly addressing security challenges and maintaining peace and stability in the region.”
More than a week ago, the Chinese Ministry of Defense said that the Chinese and Russian air forces carried out a “strategic air patrol” over the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea and the western Pacific Ocean, “to demonstrate their determination and ability to maintain peace and stability in the region.”
Chinese-Russian military exercises have always raised concerns in the West and countries allied with them in the region, as Reuters revealed, citing two European officials and documents, that the two countries conducted a secret military training in which 4 Russian generals and at least two Chinese participated directly.
The two officials said that the participation of such senior military figures in exercises related to the war in Ukraine reflects the importance that Moscow and Beijing attach to this cooperation, which has raised concern in Europe despite China’s denial of its occurrence.
