The Great Barrier Reef in the Australian state of Queensland fails to be classified as threatened – despite the UN expressing “greatest concern” over the extensive coral bleaching and the impact of climate change.
The UN agency Unesco has been monitoring the reef annually since 2021 when it warned that it was at risk of being placed on the list of World Heritage in Danger.
A draft of a new Unesco report notes Australia’s work on climate change, water quality, sustainable fisheries management and land clearing, and the reef misses out on the list.
The draft decision will be considered by the World Heritage Committee within a few weeks.
