When the eleven-year-old woke up, he had a bat over his mouth and nose. A few weeks later the boy was dead.
The incident in Canadian Ontario took place in 2024, but is now highlighted in a newly published study.
As the parents could not see any bite or tear marks, they did not seek treatment for their son, according to the study. About three weeks later, he began to experience numbness and swelling in his face.
After that, the boy quickly got worse: high fever, confusion, hallucinations and difficulty swallowing. Just over two weeks after he was admitted to hospital, he died of rabies.
The researchers behind the study urge the public to seek medical care after contact with bats.
