Historic qualification

Mexico ended a 40-year wait for a victory in the knockout stage of the World Cup, after goals from Raul Jimenez and Julian Quinones in the first half secured victory over Ecuador on Wednesday, qualifying the co-hosting country to the round of 16, amid festive scenes in the Azteca Stadium, which was boiling with enthusiasm.

This victory in the round of 32 was Mexico’s first in the knockout stage of the World Cup since its victory at home against Bulgaria in 1986, thus booking a date in the round of 16 with the winner of the match against England and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the host team will return to the Azteca Stadium to play the last match of the tournament held in this stadium.

“The first half was really good, and in the second half we remained calm in defense,” Mexico coach Javier Aguirre said.

He added, “Looking at the atmosphere and how happy everyone is, I am convinced that there is a real bond between the fans and the team.”

The start of the match was delayed by one hour due to thunderstorms, but the weather did not dampen the enthusiasm that exceeded even the atmosphere of Mexico’s opening match in the tournament.
