The office of Andy Burnham, a member of Parliament from the British Labor Party, who is expected to succeed Keir Starmer as Prime Minister, said that Burnham will review the features of his vision for the future of Britain on Monday, and will promise to change the way the country is run by transferring power from London to the regions.
Burnham, who returned to Westminster earlier this month after winning a seat in Parliament, is the only currently announced candidate to take over from Starmer, and that could happen within weeks.
From the Manchester People’s History Museum, Burnham is scheduled to deliver a highly anticipated speech, with many inside and outside his party wondering what change he wants to bring to Labour’s governance policy.
Many are awaiting his proposals in the field of the economy, where growth is shrinking and the labor market is under pressure, in light of continuing fears of increased inflation.
Burnham will also reveal the approach he intends to adopt to “revitalize Britain” by “delivering a much-needed shock,” according to circulated excerpts of his speech.
Starmer announced last week that he would step down from his position, just two years after winning an overwhelming parliamentary majority for the Labor Party, in light of the decline in his popularity.
Burnham, who rose to prominence when he was mayor of Greater Manchester and earned the title “King of the North,” will use his speech on Monday to present his main proposal, which is to transfer power to regions and local communities.
He will also commit to a 10-year mission to raise living standards by reviving the manufacturing sector, housing, infrastructure and reforming public facilities. His office said the focus would not only be on who will rule Britain, but on changing the way it is governed.
He will outline how he plans to “return Britain to where it deserves” and provide “the safety valve it needs”, and will pledge to reform the public procurement system to better support the country’s jobs and industry.
Burnham will be Britain’s seventh prime minister in 10 years if he takes office. Many in his party believe he is the only one with the charisma and vision needed to connect with voters and counter the rise of the anti-immigration Reform Party led by Nigel Farage.
