The United States and Iran have agreed to stop attacking each other, a high-ranking American source told the news site Axios.
This means that the countries’ planned negotiations in the coming week will be cancelled.
– We decided to stop all kinetic activity, the source tells Axios, using a military term for, for example, air strikes.
Another American source tells the site that both sides agree to return to the ceasefire, “for now”.
According to the sources, representatives of the US and Iran will resume the so-called technical talks in the Qatari capital Doha on Tuesday. Then the situation around the Strait of Hormuz will be discussed.
Tuesday’s negotiations were actually supposed to take place in Switzerland and would have focused on Iran’s nuclear energy program. But the escalation in recent days has refocused talks on the important strait, according to Axio’s sources.
The White House has not commented on the data.
The US has directed new attacks at Iran this weekend, while Iran responded by attacking US bases in countries such as Bahrain and Kuwait.
The latest escalation took off on Thursday, when a ship sailing through the Strait of Hormuz was said to have been attacked by an Iranian drone. Iran and the Revolutionary Guards have described it as the ship violating the rules set by the Iranians.
The countries have accused each other of violating the ceasefire and the terms of the memorandum of understanding they signed on June 15. That agreement should constitute a first step in the process towards a lasting peace.
