Brazil recovered from a first-half deficit to defeat Japan 2-1 in a dramatic FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 clash at Houston Stadium on Monday. Kaishu Sano stunned the five-time champions with a superb first-half strike, but Carlo Ancelotti’s side responded after the break through Casemiro before Gabriel Martinelli netted a stoppage-time winner to seal Brazil’s place in the Round of 16.

Japan frustrated Brazil for much of the contest with an organised defensive display and dangerous counter-attacks, but sustained second-half pressure eventually told as the Selecao completed a late turnaround.

Ancelotti’s men controlled possession from the opening whistle, with Vinícius Júnior and Lucas Paquetá attempting to stretch Japan’s compact back line. However, Hajime Moriyasu’s side remained disciplined, dropping into a well-organised defensive shape before breaking quickly through Daizen Maeda and the supporting midfield runners.

The first clear opening fell to Brazil in the 14th minute when Matheus Cunha tested Zion Suzuki with a low effort from outside the box after neat build-up involving Casemiro and Bruno Guimarães. The Japan goalkeeper got down smartly to push the shot behind for a corner.

Japan responded after the midway point of the half. Ayase Ueda headed narrowly wide from a corner before the breakthrough arrived in the 29th minute.

Danilo misplaced a pass in midfield, allowing Kaishu Sano to intercept and surge forward. With Brazil’s defence retreating, Sano unleashed a powerful low strike from outside the area that beat Alisson Becker and found the bottom corner to hand Japan a surprise 1-0 lead.

Brazil struggled to create clear-cut opportunities before the interval despite dominating possession. Vinícius curled an effort comfortably into Suzuki’s hands, while Japan continued to threaten on the break, taking their one-goal advantage into halftime.

Ancelotti responded immediately after the restart by introducing Endrick for Lucas Paquetá, giving Brazil greater attacking presence through the middle.

The change gradually shifted momentum. Casemiro came close in the 54th minute after meeting Rayan’s delivery, only for Takehiro Tomiyasu to produce a crucial goal-line block.

Brazil finally found the equaliser two minutes later. Gabriel Magalhães floated an inviting cross into the area and Casemiro rose highest to power a header beyond Suzuki, making amends after a difficult opening hour.

The Selecao nearly completed the turnaround moments later when Vinícius Júnior nutmegged Tomiyasu with a stunning first-time touch at the halfway line and charged into the area. The Real Madrid man held off his defenders before firing a low shot towards the far bottom corner, but Suzuki managed to get a touch pushing the ball onto the post.

Both managers turned to their benches midway through the second half. Gabriel Martinelli replaced Matheus Cunha for Brazil, while Japan introduced fresh defensive reinforcements as they looked to preserve parity and force extra time.

Brazil continued to push forward in the closing stages, although Japan defended resolutely. Casemiro was forced off with an apparent lower-leg injury during stoppage time, with Fabinho replacing the veteran midfielder.

Just as extra time appeared inevitable, Brazil produced the decisive moment.

In the sixth minute of added time, Bruno Guimarães threaded a perfectly weighted pass into the penalty area to Martinelli, who kept his composure and curled his finish beyond Suzuki to complete Brazil’s comeback and send the Selecao into the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16.

Brazil will face the winner of the Norway vs Ivory Coast clash in the Round of 16 on July 5 at the New York New Jersey Stadium, with a place in the World Cup quarter-finals on the line.
