The Finestris Foundation opened the doors of its library dedicated to Palestine in the center of the Gracia neighborhood in Barcelona, not only to raise awareness about the Palestinian issue, but also to shed light on the rich Palestinian literature since its inception.
Palestinian writer Muhammad Bitari, one of those in charge of this project, told Al Jazeera that they named this initiative “Finestris Palestine,” stressing that the library includes thousands of Palestinian works in various languages, starting from fictional literature, poetry, and theater, all the way to history and art.
Bitari stated that the reason for their opening of this library started from a racist incident, and he recounts: “Inside one of our libraries in Spain, which has shelves dedicated to Palestinian books, someone entered and poured coffee on works bearing the name Palestine. So, after long discussions in “Finistros,” we decided to open a library dedicated entirely to Palestine.”
Regarding the role he hopes this library will play in consolidating the Palestinian cause in Europe, Bitari explained that literature in general helps preserve the cause, but its mission is not only to help, but also to protect the cause because there is Palestinian literature that predates the occupation.
He added that the institution’s mission is to shed light on literature that includes Palestinian memories and experiences at home and abroad and to present the Palestinian narrative to the world.
Bitari pointed out that the library was greatly celebrated by academics, residents of the neighborhood, its visitors, and tourists who flock to Barcelona in large numbers, in addition to the rapid response of publishing and distribution houses to those in charge of the space.
Serving the Palestinian cause
He said that the news that spread around the world about the opening of the first Palestinian library in Europe had caused a great resonance, noting that many nationalities enter the library every day and ask for help in learning about Palestinian literature.

He considered that the library is a center for Palestine in Barcelona, as some people do not know anything about Palestine and come and ask for some information. He said that their job in the library is to provide information and suggestions and talk with people so that they learn about Palestine, its cause and its literature.
Bitari promised – as stated in the report of journalist Abdul Aziz Sabah – that the library will have a very important role in serving the Palestinian cause and helping Palestinian writers, male and female writers, and male and female artists, indicating that one of their most important goals is for the library to be a starting point for literary, educational and awareness-raising activities to serve the Palestinian cause.
