Despite Iranian threats and uncertainties, maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is to some extent underway. A total of 115 ships have passed since Tuesday, reports the UN’s maritime agency IMO.
The announcement comes after the IMO on Thursday temporarily suspended its effort to assist around 600 ships that are deemed to be stuck in the waters around the strait.
The reason for the break was an attack on a Singapore-flagged ship that passed out in the Gulf of Oman on Thursday. According to information to American media, Iranian forces were behind the shelling.
Many of the ships that now ply the important waterway do so at the urging of the IMO and Oman through a corridor along the Omani coast. But Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has warned that this is happening without Tehran’s permission and that the ships can therefore be stopped.
