Former world record holder Kibiwott Kandie, 30, is not allowed to compete until he is 36.
The marathon runner broke the doping rules.
Kandie won the Barcelona Half Marathon ahead of Andreas Almgren in 2024, but in March 2025 he was suspended pending an investigation. The Kenyan runner was suspected of two violations of doping rules. Partly for having refused to submit to a doping test and partly for having tried to manipulate a test.
Now the verdict has been passed. Kandie’s suspension will be a total of seven years – between March 14, 2025 and March 13, 2032.
– This case is a reminder that no athlete is above the rules in athletics. If an athlete refuses to submit to a test, it is a danger to the integrity of the sport, says Brett Clothier who is the head of the athletics integrity unit AIU.
Evidence on the phone
The evidence against Kandie includes information from his phone and bank account. He had several calls and payments linked to a nurse in the year that passed before he refused to be tested.
Kandie is also said to have submitted falsified documents as an explanation for not being tested, writes Reuters.
In 2020, Kandie set a new half marathon world record when he ran in 57 minutes and 32 seconds in Valencia. That record has been broken since then and now the Ugandan Jacob Kiplimo is the fastest with a time of 57.20.
