An American public opinion poll revealed a state of widespread popular skepticism in the United States regarding President Donald Trump’s policy toward Iran.
According to the results of the poll conducted by Reuters and Ipsos, only one American in four sees a justification for the war launched against Iran, while there is general concern about the fragility of the current truce and its inability to withstand.
Only 23% of respondents believe that Washington’s position has become stronger than it was before the war began, and 35% believe that this position has declined, with 63% of respondents convinced that the recent initial agreement between the two countries will not succeed in establishing lasting peace.
The poll coincided with the adoption by the US Senate, yesterday, Tuesday, of a resolution ordering the withdrawal of US forces from the war with Iran, in a symbolic setback for Trump, as the text is not legally binding.
The resolution was approved by a vote of 50 to 48. Because of Congressional rules, the Republican president would not even need to veto it, but it is considered A blow to Trump in the midst of negotiations with Iran, while his party has a majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Trump criticized Congress’s decision, saying it was “ill-timed and meaningless,” adding: “These senators have made my job more difficult, but I will get it done one way or another, because I always get things done.”
The opposition has been seeking for weeks to restrict the president’s military powers in the conflict with Iran, denouncing what it sees as the circumvention of the executive authority he represents over the legislative authority. According to the US Constitution, declaring war is within the power of Congress alone.
