But there will be no Olympic hockey on the French Riviera.
It is moved to Lyon.
The 2030 Winter Olympics will be held in France, hosted by the French Alps.
The idea was that the hockey would played in Nicewhere the football team OGC Nice’s home arena would be temporarily transformed into two hockey arenas.
It won’t be like that.
Moved to Lyon
IOC writes that ice hockey, curling, figure skating and short track are moved to Lyon. The decision is to reduce costs and make the 2030 Winter Olympics more compact. Exactly which arenas will be used is not yet clear.
Nice’s new mayor Éric Ciotti have this spring opposed several of the Olympic projects that were planned in the city, including the hockey arenas on the Allianz Riviera.
Skating in the Netherlands
The skating competitions are proposed to be decided in the Dutch Thialf, with the explanation that France lacks an existing arena for the sport. The strong public support and the financial benefits are highlighted as two arguments.
Lyon has already been awarded the 2028 Hockey World Cup.
During the Olympics in Milan, which were decided in February, Tre Kronor’s men went to the quarter-finals. The ladies finished fourth after losing to Switzerland in overtime.
