Outgoing US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard revealed declassified documents and correspondence, which she said shed light on Anthony Fauci’s role in funding dangerous genetic research at the Chinese Wuhan laboratory, and his subsequent complicity to obscure the facts that support the hypothesis of a laboratory leak as the origin of the “Covid-19” pandemic.
Gabbard said, in a post on the

The term “increasing viral function” means a group of scientific experiments that include making genetic modifications to microorganisms, such as viruses, with the aim of enhancing or changing some of their biological properties.
These modifications may include increasing the virus’s ability to cause disease, increasing its efficiency in transmitting and spreading between organisms, or expanding the range of hosts that it can infect, allowing it to infect new species that it was not able to infect previously, according to the definitions provided by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the US Department of Health and Human Services.
Gabbard accused Fauci of working with what she described as politicized elements within the American intelligence community to suppress information related to the origin of the virus, and to hide dimensions related to the laboratory leak hypothesis.
She added that the documents also include what she considered evidence that Fauci gave incorrect information to Congress during his testimony in 2024, calling on the public to view the materials published on the website of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
Hiding information and misleading
In a video statement, Gabbard said that the research that Fauci funded before the outbreak of the pandemic at the Wuhan Institute is, as she described, among the most widely circulated hypotheses to explain the unintended laboratory leak that led to the spread of the virus globally.
She confirmed that the declassified documents, in the context of what she said was an implementation of President Donald Trump’s directives regarding the utmost levels of transparency, reveal how Fauci cooperated with leaders within the intelligence community to influence the intelligence services’ assessments regarding the origin of “Covid-19,” and cover up his role in directing American funding for that research.
Gabbard accused Fauci of concealing information about his relationships and communications with intelligence officials, saying that the published documents contradict his testimony before Congress in 2024, when he denied under oath his knowledge or participation in discussions with intelligence services regarding virus research.
She also said that her office received testimonies from several informants within the intelligence community who reported that they were subjected to retaliatory measures because of their objection to the way some agencies dealt with information related to the origins of the virus, considering that these testimonies reveal a systematic pattern of suppressing dissenting opinions and silencing critics.
According to Gabbard, Fauci’s close ties to the intelligence community enabled him to perform three main roles:
- Funding “viral function augmentation” research linked, as it describes it, to large-scale vaccine development projects.
- Influencing the adoption of the hypothesis of the natural origin of the virus through experts and advisors close to it.
- In addition to using his public influence to defend this narrative and confront dissenting opinions.
She said that the hundreds of emails that were reviewed indicate that the intelligence services were taking Fauci’s recommendations repeatedly, adding that he promoted a research paper that she described as fabricated and contributed to pushing for its publication, before using it in discussions related to assessing the origin of the virus.
Marginalization and threat
Gabbard also accused senior officials within the intelligence community of pressuring analysts who disagreed with the prevailing conclusions regarding the origins of the pandemic, referring to testimonies that spoke of professional marginalization and threats of denial of promotion against those who adopted the laboratory leak hypothesis or put forward dissenting opinions.
She said that some whistleblowers confirmed that they were subjected to attempts to reveal their identities, despite the supposed guarantees to protect whistleblowers, as well as the imposition of the presence of directors or legal advisors during testimonial meetings, which she described as creating an “environment of intimidation.”
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence confirmed, in a statement attached to the documents, that the published materials reveal what it described as Fauci’s “direct role” in influencing intelligence assessments related to “Covid-19,” and highlight allegations about conflicts of interest and communication between health officials and intelligence agencies during investigations related to the origin of the virus.
This step comes at a time when the political battle continues inside Washington over the identity of who will succeed Gabbard as Director of National Intelligence, while the documents published by it reopen the controversy that has been ongoing for years about the origin of the Corona virus and the role of American health and intelligence institutions in investigations related to it.
