He had a stroke and she ended up in a wheelchair.
Helena Bergström now talks about the difficult period when both she and her husband suffered from illness and accidents at the same time.
In 2024, the actor was executed Helena Bergström62, by his dog and injured his foot. She ended up in a wheelchair at the same time as her husband, the director Colin Nutley82, recovered after a stroke.
In his summer talk she now tells us more about the tough time.
– In the hospital corridor I am wheeled by my son in the same wheelchair that I wheeled Colin in a week ago, she says.
When she realized that it could be years before she would recover and that she would need surgery, she panicked. Bergström tells what she thought when she got the news.
– This does not apply to me. I can’t have surgery, I don’t have time. I have to take care of Colin when he gets home from the hospital.
She and Nutley were also about to begin the sequel to the film “Blackjack”.
– What should we do with the film? Now we have struggled with it for so long. We have to do it. How else is it going with our film company? Economic disaster, says Bergström.
At first after the accidents, the focus was on both her and Nutley’s recovery. Bergström was finally able to get from a wheelchair to crutches. Nutley was allowed to come home from the hospital and regained his speech.
Even though Bergström herself was struggling to get by, she still wanted to take care of her husband as best she could, even if it meant crawling up the stairs on her knees to give him a glass of juice.
– Woman trap, control or just madness? I don’t have an answer to that question, she says.
And there were many questions she sought answers to during the tough period.
– What happens now? What will our life look like? How will everything change? Or is it over now?
How are Helena Bergström and Colin Nutley today
When Bergström writes his summer speech, a year and a half has passed since the accidents.
– I look out the window. Colin cuts grass, sings to himself. He’s back. Not as nimble and quick on his feet, maybe a little slower in his speech.
Recently he told us that he had a new idea for a film. That made Bergström happy.
Her foot is almost completely healed.
– I have a little difficulty with high heels, she says.
But many of the roles she does don’t require high heels.
She and her husband have moved out of town and out into the country.
– I see this time as a close of accounts and the beginning of something new, says Helena Bergström.
